Summary of the changes effective November 1, 2019:

ATM Reimbursement

Due to member-owner feedback, we are bringing back ATM surcharge reimbursement with direct deposit of net pay1 into a Service Credit Union checking account and expanding our network to include an additional 55,000 surcharge-free ATMs to our 33,000 ATM network.

One Primary Savings Account

All members will earn 5% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on the first $500 in their Primary Savings Account, and .5% APY on all funds over $500. All STAR, Senior, Veterans, Select Employer Group (SEG), eKids, eTeens, and regular share savings will be automatically converted into the Primary Savings Account. This change in our savings account suite simplifies our savings options and enhances the savings power for all members.

Checking Account Enhancements

Members with Basic, Student or Classic Checking will be converted to our new Everyday Checking account. As always, members who select our Everyday Checking will be able to enjoy no monthly maintenance fee. In both checking account options, there are benefits based on your account activity.

Dividend Checking Account

Members with Five Star checking will convert to our Dividend Checking account and will earn dividends along with other benefits. See the included informational tables for full descriptions of our change in terms, and contact us if you would like to choose another option.

Military Benefits

Military, military retirees and select government workers who get paid by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) will automatically receive the best checking account benefits regardless of the amount of direct deposit received.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Service Credit Union make this change to its account structure?

Our goal with the new checking and savings account structure is to simplify our services for members and provide them with the personalized solutions they deserve. We are moving from multiple different savings account options into just one, with loan discounts now being tied to one’s checking account with us instead of their savings account relationship.  It should be much clearer to our members and our employees what benefits are available and how to qualify for them.

What is the difference between Everyday and Dividend checking?

Members with Everyday checking are able to enjoy no monthly maintenance fee, regardless of their daily minimum balance, but do not earn dividends on their account. Members with Dividend checking are able to grow their balances by .1% APY but must either pay a $10 monthly maintenance fee or maintain a minimum daily balance of $1,500 to have the maintenance fee waived.

Does the direct deposit have to go into my checking account, or can it be in my savings account?

To qualify for direct deposit benefits, the direct deposit must go into your checking account.  The benefit will be given to the Primary member on the checking account.

Can I still get paid early?

Yes, members with direct deposit will still be able to get paid up to two days early. Learn more here.

I am in the military/a military retiree. Do I need to make the five payments per month to qualify for the Direct Deposit + tier?

If your DFAS payroll is deposited into your Service CU checking account, you do not need to also meet the 5 payment requirement for Direct Deposit + tier.  Your military service qualifies you for Direct Deposit on its own (provided your payroll comes here).

Will you reimburse ISA fees on debit transactions?

ISA (International Service Assessment) fees will not be reimbursed on debit cards.  We are only reimbursing ATM surcharge fees for debit cards: $15 per month for Direct Deposit tier and $30 per month for Direct Deposit+ tier. Visa® credit card transactions are not charged ISA fees.

Do you still offer overdraft protection?

Yes, we offer savings transfer overdraft protection (S.T.O.P.) at $5 per transfer (limit up to 6 per month) for Basic tier and Direct Deposit tier checking members.  This is a free service for Direct Deposit+ checking members.

Courtesy Pay is also offered on our checking accounts, with a $30 fee per honored transaction.  Previously, Courtesy Pay was not available on our Basic Checking account; this may now be available to you if you meet certain qualifications.

Savings Account Questions

What will happen to my current savings account?

All current primary savings accounts will move into the new reverse tier structure automatically on November 1, 2019.

I am in a special savings account group. (Warrior, SEG, Senior, Veteran, eKids, eTeens.) What happens to my account?

All existing savings accounts will convert to one primary Service Credit Union savings account, with the exception of the Deployed Warrior Savings Account, which is a special military designation that will remain.

I am in a special group (SEG/STAR/Senior/Veteran/Warrior.) What happens to my existing loan discount?

These groups will continue to enjoy the existing discounts on their loans. Discounts on loans granted after November 1 will depend on the checking relationship as outlined in the tables below.

I have a savings account balance over $500. What can I do to save more?

We provide many options for those with larger savings balances to save even more. This includes our Holiday Club, which allows members to earn 3% APY* on balances up to $3,000, as well as our Money Market account, with rates from .75% to 1.25% APY** depending on average monthly balance. As a longer-term savings option, a share certificate can offer even greater returns.

*Holiday club account: Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is accurate as of 9/1/19 and subject to change without notice.  Balances > $3,000 earn standard Club Savings dividend rate of 0.25% APY.  Funds are disbursed on the first business day in November.  One Holiday Club account allowed per primary account holder.

**Money Market accounts:  Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is accurate as of 9/1/19 and subject to change without notice. Minimum balance to earn dividends is $2,500.00; variable APY of 0.75%. For balances of $25,000.00 to $99,999.99; variable APY of 1.00%. For balances $100,000.00 or greater; variable APY of 1.25%. Fees could reduce the earnings on the account.

What qualifies as a payment for Direct Deposit+?

At the end of the month, your account will be debited the monthly maintenance fee if your dividend checking account balance fell below $1,500 at any point during the month.

What tier will I be in when these changes take place?
