We understand the loss of a loved one is a difficult and painful time for you and your family, and navigating financial assets is an added stress. This guide will provide some necessary information to assist you with the account closing process to make it as easy as possible.

Closing of the Account

Each deceased member’s account is handled on a case by case basis, depending on several determining factors. Therefore, we ask that the joint owner, beneficiary or family member contact us directly for assistance regarding the deceased member’s account.

  • Photo copy of the Death Certificate
  • Report of Casualty (if applicable)
  • Executor information/Certificate of appointment (if applicable)

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the account remain open?
We ask that the deceased member’s accounts be closed as soon as possible to avoid any IRS tax-filing complications. However, we cannot determine the length of time it will take to settle an account without first reviewing the individual’s account. Please call us at your convenience.

As a joint member on the account, can I still use my debit/credit cards?
Yes, as a joint member you can still use your debit/credit cards until the account is closed. The deceased member’s cards will be deactivated.

Do I need to cancel automatic payments being deducted from the account?
Yes, you need to contact all of the companies that are deducting from the account and inform them that the member has passed away.

As a co-applicant, am I responsible for the remaining balance?
It is best to contact Service Credit Union to determine this, as there are various factors to consider.
