Celebrating 73 Reasons and the Heroes Who Make Our Communities Stronger

At Service Credit Union, supporting the communities we serve has always been part of who we are. For the past several years, that promise has come to life through 73 Reasons, a community-driven campaign built around gratitude, service, and recognizing everyday heroes who make a real difference.

At the heart of the campaign is our partnership with Charlie McAvoy, whose commitment to giving back mirrors Service Credit Union’s own values. Together, we’ve spotlighted the people who quietly show up for others, namely the first responders who so frequently go above and beyond without expecting recognition.

What is the 73 Reasons Campaign?
New England’s first responders put their lives on the line every day to protect the communities where we live and work. Through the 73 Reasons campaign, Service Credit Union is committed to giving back to those who give so much by helping protect them from the unseen dangers of the job.

For firefighters, that hidden risk is cancer. For many police officers, it’s heart disease. Screening tests for these health threats are often not fully covered by insurance, yet early detection can be life-saving. Through 73 Reasons, Service Credit Union provides funding for cancer and heart disease screenings for firefighters and police officers across New England.

With nearly $1 million spent in screenings and donations to first responders, our financial support has covered over 600 cancer screenings for firefighters and 1,000 heart screenings for police officers. Several of the screenings have led to potentially lifesaving, early cancer detection.

Introducing the Hero of the Season
Building on the success of 73 Reasons, we’re proud to introduce Hero of the Season, a new way to recognize outstanding individuals who consistently serve others and strengthen their communities.

From now through March 31, we invite the community to nominate a first responder who consistently goes above and beyond in service to others by visiting servicecu.org/73reasons/#nominate. Whether it’s a police officer, firefighter, paramedic/EMT, or dispatcher making a meaningful difference, Hero of the Season is an opportunity to share their story and recognize the vital role they play in keeping our communities safe.

One nominee will be randomly selected at the beginning of May to receive a signed Charlie McAvoy hockey puck, and their story will be shared on our social media channels.

If you know a first responder whose dedication deserves to be highlighted, we encourage you to submit a nomination and help us continue recognizing the heroes among us.
