Money Tips for Veterans: Save More and Make the Most of Your Benefits

At Service Credit Union, we’re proud to serve those who have served our country. Not only do we recognize the sacrifices made by our military members and their families, we want to help ensure that the financial well-being they’ve worked so hard for continues long after service.

Whether you’re transitioning to civilian life or managing long-term financial goals, smart budgeting and taking advantage of available veteran benefits can help you build a secure future.

Create a Post-Service Budget

Transitioning from active duty to civilian life often means changes in income and expenses. Start by tracking your monthly costs, such as housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, and healthcare, and compare them against your current income. Service Credit Union’s checking and savings accounts make it easy to set up automatic transfers, helping you stay on track with your savings goals and build an emergency fund for unexpected expenses.

Make the Most of Military and Veteran Discounts

Many businesses offer discounts year-round for veterans and military families, from restaurants and retail stores to travel and car insurance. Check out sites such as Military.com and DAV (Disabled American Veterans) for updated lists of military discounts and freebies.

Use Your VA Home Loan Benefit

If homeownership is one of your financial goals, a VA Home Loan through Service Credit Union can make it more attainable. Backed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Loans offer significant advantages such as no or low down payment for qualified borrowers, competitive interest rates and no private mortgage insurance (PMI) requirement. At Service Credit Union, we offer a one-time rate float down option.* That means that if the interest rates for VA loans decrease after you have locked in your rate but before your loan is finalized, you will have the opportunity to request the lower rate.

Take Advantage of Financial Counseling and Support

Financial transitions can be challenging, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. Organizations such as Green path Financial Wellness offer free financial counseling, debt management programs and housing Services to Service Credit Union members.
