Service Credit Union Puts Community Giving in Hands of Branches With “Adopt a Nonprofit"

PORTSMOUTH, NH (June 10, 2026) – For the seventh year running, Service Credit Union's U.S. branches each selected a local nonprofit to support through its "Adopt a Nonprofit" initiative, directing $500 to organizations chosen by the branch teams themselves.

The thinking behind the program is simple: no one knows a community better than the people who show up there every day. A total of $18,000 in donations was made throughout the month of May to nonprofits across New Hampshire and Massachusetts, as well as Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The program empowers each branch to identify and support an organization that matters most to the people in their area, from basic needs and food insecurity to youth enrichment and community services. Organizations supported include the Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the MSPCA, as well as local, independent nonprofits such as Hudson Community Food Pantry, Hope on Haven Hill, and many more.

“We chose the Nam Knights because their mission honors the courage and sacrifice of those who serve, while standing beside veterans and first responders when they need it most, something that deeply reflects Service Credit Union's own commitment to our community,” said Jenn Brown, manager of Service Credit Union’s Amherst branch.  The Nam Knights is a motorcycle club started in 1989 by a small group of Harley-Riding combat vets of the Vietnam War who were also police officers, in order to recapture the brotherhood of its founding members, and to help other veterans of all wars who are unable to physically or financially help themselves.

The effort truly spans a variety of causes. Service Credit Union’s Durham branch, located on UNH’s campus, chose to donate to the Freedom Café, a nonprofit coffee shop committed to ending human trafficking through the sale of high quality, ethically sourced beverages, raising awareness through a variety of community events and outreach.

“The Freedom Café is grateful for the ongoing support and partnership of Service Credit Union. The branch team in Durham is consistently cheerful, responsive, and quick to assist with everyday banking needs, making them a valued resource for our organization. Beyond banking, Service Credit Union actively invests in strengthening our local community by supporting events that bring together businesses, nonprofits and community members. Their team not only sponsored but also volunteered at our Festival in the Field fundraiser, and for several years has participated in our Freedom Builder Coffee Club, providing steady support for educational programs working to address human trafficking and exploitation,” said Bryan Bessette, co-founder and executive director of The Freedom Cafe.

In Portsmouth, the local branch chose to shed light on a nonprofit that helps breast cancer survivors in the recovery stage of the disease via medical and scar camouflage tattoos, Ink 4 Pink. “We are so grateful for Service Credit Union's support. Thank you for helping us spread the word about our mission. Thanks to your donation, we are able to change the lives of breast cancer survivors in New England by restoring confidence and a sense of self,” said Ink 4 Pink founder Corina Klein.

Adopt a Nonprofit is one of many ways Service Credit Union engages its employees to make a direct impact on the communities they serve. Other efforts include Service Credit Union’s regular branch drives, in which branches pick their nonprofit of choice to receive donations from members; Service Month, a monthlong series of local volunteer opportunities for employees; and hundreds of other local community events throughout the year.
